At the end of April, my sister Jenna and I travelled to Banff, AB to capture an engagement session and for an excuse for a weekend getaway. Eugene and Queenie are one of my 2017 wedding couples, and I was thrilled to be able to capture their love in the mountains.

I met Eugene and Queenie just before Christmas and we instantly connected. They are such a kind couple, who are clearly so well-suited for each other, and I instantly knew they would be a wonderful couple to work with. During our meeting, our mutual love for the mountains came up, and that’s when I decided we needed to coordinate our schedules to shoot in the mountains.

Eugene and Queenie brought along their dog, Lola. My sister was an excellent extra set of hands and eyes to assist throughout the shoot, but I know Lola appreciated her warm snuggles as well!

We began at Whitebark Cafe, to fill our stomachs with treats and lattes. We then head out to Johnson Lake, with its gorgeous bridge; to Two Jack Lake, with its open water and stunning backdrop; to Lake Minnewanka, where there was ice on the lake surrounded by rocks and trees. It was so cold, and the wind was blowing as the sun played hide and seek with the clouds. Queenie was amazing the entire time, never complaining once even though the wind was icy and she was in a dress. We even saw a few daredevils jumping into the cold water for a polar swim!

Halfway through the session, I slipped down a muddy bank and covered my camera in mud. Fortunately we were able to have a good laugh, get the gear cleaned up, and kept going. Nothing could stop us from having an incredible session together.

Near the end of the engagement session we were shooting in the forest. The sun went away and the wind picked up yet again, but it allowed for beautiful, moody images. Queenie’s hair and dress blew in the wind and Eugene wrapped her in his arms to keep her warm. It was magical!
