Happy Mother’s Day!

Thank you for taking a moment out of your Sunday to sit here with me and read something close to my heart. Mother’s day is truly one of the most important days of the year. Even though we should always be celebrating our mothers, (and those that step into the mother role) I believe in dedicating this day to the ones who raised us to be the people we are today.

I found the timing of this entry to be perfectly suited for Mother’s Day. If you follow my work closely, you will know that the people in this post are extra special to me. In February I photographed Stephanie’s maternity session at the Edmonton Ice Castle that you can see here. Scott & Stephanie are not only family, but our best friends and they allowed me the honour of sharing a bit about their story. Stephanie went into labour while at home, at the end of the first period of an Oiler playoff game. Earlier in the day she had instagramed a picture of her baby bump, captioned that they just had to make it through that night’s game. Well that didn’t quite happen. Off to the hospital they went, with Scott in his lucky Edmonton Oilers socks and all!

In the early hours of April 15, Hudson Wowdzia was born. A healthy 7lb 10 oz baby boy! I arrived late that afternoon to capture their first few quiet moments as a family. This is also referred to as a Fresh 48 session.

Hudson was born on Easter weekend, and we had a huge dump of snow in Edmonton. With travelling conditions not being great, their first son Nixon waited until mom and dad came home to meet his baby brother for the first time.

A few days later, after they settled in as a family of four, I arrived to their home to capture a newborn lifestyle session. It’s referred to as “lifestyle” as the images focus on the interaction of the newborn with the family and less about posed portraits of the newborn. Since finding this style of photography, I have fallen in love with newborn sessions all over again. Capturing the details in the nursery, the quiet moments held by mom and dad, kisses from siblings. My job is to be a visual story teller, and I believe that shooting this style enables me to capture the candid and raw elements of a family’s story.

Welcome to the world, Hudson. Now go hug your moms and give them all a little extra love on this special day. ♥
